The Road to ‘Op: Balaur’ a Milsim Story
Unlike the title may suggest this isn’t an epic story told by truth sayers and Bards but more a break down of our prep for the Milsim coming up at the end of the month.
Mission: Situated at Longmoor Training camp down south the event has been put to 36hr and involves sleeping in game which means you get bumped at night. We have a basic staging area in the woods near the village and if we wish to sleep in doors we must take and hold buildings to do so.
We, of course, chose Opfor as bad guys have the most fun and set to planning kit, roles and how much pyro was too much pyro.
The Site: Longmoor is a mixture of a small ‘town’ surrounded by woodland and open space a good mix of everything would be a good description. Also, they have burnt out tanks and vehicles scattered.
The Gear: After some changes and suggestions from the group going, we decided upon Pakol hat (wool hats in August is a terrible idea)/boonie, tiger stripe BDU’s or similar and black pants with rigs/belts being a mix of black and green as the rules stated for the event.
The Gats: The game doesn’t have many restrictions other than the standard mid-low caps and to make sure the the rif being used has a real-world variant so the newer paintball style rifs or pistols with box mags wouldn’t be allowed. Most of the guys really like gas guns and with this game being single shot only unless an LMG then you can field low cap gas guns and not field outgunned by weight of shots.
Martyn: Tokyo Marui MWS (M4) with a Gen 4 Tokyo Marui Glock
Dan: Tokyo Marui AKX with no side arm
Gaz: Tokyo Marui AKM with a Tokyo Marui HK45
James: Tokyo Marui MWS M4 and Kwa scorpion as sidearm
Adam: Tokyo Marui SD6 with a Tokyo Marui Glock
Dolan: VFC M723 with a Guarder G17 Gen 4
Dayle: Tokyo Marui Skar with Tokyo Marui FNX Side arm
Jack: Systema PTW with Tokyo Marui MK23 sidearm
Josh: Tokyo Marui AKX with Tokyo Marui M&P9
The rules at this event state every squad can have an LMG, DMR, Sniper out as they play but they are limited to 1 sniper or DMR AND 1 lmg.
LMG: After the last event we attended we will again be using the PKM as our LMG as it goes over the minimum weight all LMGs must adhere to at these events.
Sniper: a few option were taken last time but (again) Dan’s Noveritch sniper folds down and can be chucked over the shoulder so we tended to stick with that and will probably do this again.
A mortar is also allowed and Dan has decided he will be having fun with this at this event.
Sleeping Arrangements: So this one is a little different, we’ve all optioned for Bashas or really small basha like tents (snugpak make a good one) and we will be required to pack them away when not sleeping in them. Then if we capture a building we can use this on the next night. Most of us have had to pick up a new sleeping kit for this one and the plan is to give them all a go at the sleep over this Saturday after the Gas/Low cap game!
The Truck: We’ve been given the go ahead to take the truck with us so we’ll getting around the site a little quicker.
First Aid: There are first aiders at the event but we always take our own gear and have a few advanced first aiders involved in most events we go to help should anything go awry.
…….we’re all excited as is always the case leading up to a milsim and the first real test is this Saturday at the gas gun/low cap game.
We have recently been asked loads about milsim/away days we attend and working on team tactics/squads/best practice is something I think we all enjoy.
Things like the Gas gun/Low cap games tend to bring the crowd looking for of a milsim feel so if you want to discuss or ask questions these are the ones to get too.
We also Run RAID days which are a taster into longer games and more immersive modes that last hours at a time.
Finally, we are looking to hold milsim prep evenings to go through gear, tactics and start to build more squads so watch this space!
The Summer Social
After much anticipation its done and what a weekend it was!
Firstly we would like to thank everyone who came for such fantastic sportsmanship, team work and bringing an amazing atmosphere.
The games were hard fought and in the end the marshals all ended up playing as the gameplay was that honest and good there just wasn’t high vis’s needed. New recruits and new players to site all felt the community that Alpha breeds and from the sounds of it we’ve got even more players wanting to get involved.
It was fantastic to have everyone chatting and laughing over the Saturday evening with the games and social side and though hard fought the mini games were taken in the spirit they were meant with a lot of fun and laughs along the way.
We played
TTT – trouble in terrorist town which was a real hit. The game is basically about lying to each other and lots did this with great fever. The winner, Anthony Hesketh, which we based on who was playing this in the spirit of the game or was the best liar actually won due to a game where he spent 75% of it trying to kill a another terrorist who he should be working with subtlety without them knowing as he’d forgotten who the other terrorists were. There were a lot of laughs and friends giving each other hell as they walked away from this one!
A Battle royal variant – Now this had us all laughing! When we were preparing before the game started someone even appeared with a 2m long sword to give them better odds before finding anything that actually shoots. Everyone had to go out and either try and melee their opponents till they were last left alive or find bands which would enable their pistol to be used or if 2 found their rifle. Teams worked together only to stab each other in the back or even had people find riot shields and end up running after people who only had knives screaming in glee.
1 VS 1 pistol comp – Won by Matt Steadman this was hard fought! Weadded a few additional rules this year and by the end to speed things a long added a Greg with a riot shield to chase the players screaming. But Matt kept his cool which secured him the win through the rounds. The players who lost their cool when their mags ran out or even those that grabbed knives and ran at their opponents really made this worth a watch.
2 vs 2 doubles comp – Our raining champion Tommy returned with a new partner to try and secure himself doubles 2 years on the trott and after a lot of effort and skill he managed to pip all comers and secure himself another doubles win for the second year on the trot. James running out of ammo and meleeing a player on the floor while they wide eyed him in fear really secured the last match as a good way to end the doubles matches.
We even set a run up in the CQB with the attack sense targets to have a winner for that! You had 2 runs where the second was timed and you were deducted points based off shooting any green hostages as you went around. EVERYONE attempted this even our resident chef Tony (usually seen in the Mess tin) and everyone’s feedback was fantastic for this.
Everyone that took part did amazingly and it was great to see it all done with such high spirits.
Our next game day is the 28th which is really hotting up now! We’re currently working on setting up games that include use of thew attack sense targets which should add an interesting twist to games through the day.
Also the next blog is going to be Milsim related so watch this space to hear where we are going and how we prep/get ready and even train in some cases.
The Dates for the next social is also up so book on to get involved!
Alpha 55 Away Day June 2024
As everyone seemed interested!….
RAID 2024
June 7th-9th: HQ Airsoft venue ran by Defiant Events
After hearing good things about Defiant Events and having some lackluster milsims, we thought we’d head over to their battlesim to see what the atmosphere was like and how it was run.
The sides were simple: ‘Spearhead’ vs. ‘Tomahawk,’ or to put it simpler, tan vs. green (though the odd ATACS element did confuse things at times).
We were set up upstairs of a building classed as our HQ or FOB. Our squad consisted of 10 players, and we had set into roles of Commander, 2IC, and Radio Operator (dealing with command).
Our DS or command were set up downstairs with radio comms to all squads.
One big thing that had us all excited for the event were some of the general rules in place, which are as follows:
– Only 1 DMR/Sniper in play at a time per squad
– DMRs must look like a recognized platform
– Only 1 LMG in play at a time
– No cut-down LMGs; must be at least 4.5kg
– If it’s not an LMG, SINGLE SHOT ONLY!
– 5-minute bleed out and 1 tourniquet medic
As you may be able to tell, the single shot only rule really piqued my interest, and if I’m honest, it was a game changer.
The game started after a really good solid brief at 11:00 and End Ex was 11:00 the next day with no break in play and in-game digs (keeping eye protection on while sleeping is a must).
Everyone was given orienteering cards and we were tasked with stamping 10 locations, and we had 24 hours in which to do so. This meant everyone had to search the whole site and not just stick to the same area. Once all stamped, they had to be given to the DS and added to team points for overall results.
The overall mission basically ran different secure, hold, or ‘move this’ objectives for us, whether that be securing a building for us or getting it off them.
Both teams’ DS had orange capture cards for additional points as well, but they were quite tricky to do (which was the point).
We had all invested in new radios, which were big boys, but they performed amazingly throughout and most were still fully charged at the end of the event. Shortly into the event, we left the assigned channels and changed to one of Alpha’s UHF channels as there was too much overlap from other channels. Adam, our RO, had a second radio connected to comms and kept us in the loop while also doing loads of work for the other teams to find objectives like the orienteering task.
The guys were armed as follows:
– Dan: TM MWS M4 with a Glock as a sidearm
– Martin: Systema PTW with a Glock (though he basically used anything he could get hold of)
– Adam: TM MWS M4 with Glock sidearm
– Jack: Systema PTW with a MK23 sidearm
– Josh: A TM AKM with a Glock sidearm
– Dayle: TM Scar with FNX sidearm
– Dolan: VFC 723 and TM 226
– Greg: TM MP7 with HK45 sidearm
– Gaz: TM MWS AKM with HK45 sidearm
– Luke: TM MWS AKX with Glock sidearm
We had gone with black pants, M81 shirts, and M81 boonie hats so we could follow each other (though Jack turned up with a ridiculous moustache and dead man’s shoes style jacket).
Our section weapons were used when needed and included an HPA PKM with a thermal sight, the mortor with multi bangs and an SSG10a3 Bolt Action. Both were used extensively.
I won’t go into everything that happened but will say we all had a fantastic weekend. The single shot rule meant no over-killing, and the LMG/sniper/DMR rules meant that those platforms had more impact when they came into the fray.
Overall, our team Tomahawk won the event, but it was close, and to be honest, who cares? The firefights were amazing, the site was great, and the teamwork was top-notch.
If you like the sound of this why not come try one of our RAID events or get involved in the upcoming Battlesim event……
